I went home to big, beautiful Wyoming for the Thanksgiving holiday. It was glorious. The skies were blue. The mountains were white. The flames were burning high in the fireplace. Ah, what a cozy feeling that is. But let's be real, it was f***ing cold outside. As in your face is the only part of your body that shows, cold. Has LA turned me into THAT person? I hope not.
Dinner table talk with friends and family naturally progressed to nutrition and what I'm learning, what I recommend people eat, and how much they should eat. They were expecting me to encourage them to drink green juice, eat a vegan diet, and restrict indulgences... but no. That's not what I said at all. I was in WYOMING. And people, it was ZERO DEGREES THERE.
You best believe my body is not begging to drink a cold green juice, and eat raw foods all day. In Wyoming, I want big hearty warm bowls of rice and root vegetables. I want nourishing soups and spicy curries. I want anything/everything that shouts wholesome. You are a part of nature, and nature is freezing during a Wyoming winter. Your body is craving for you to prepare itself for the months ahead.
In Los Angeles, I gravitate towards lighter fares as it's still (nearly) summer temperatures. The earth is warm, the leafy greens and berries are abundant and the body is alive.
I hope you're seeing a theme here. This all goes back to balance and listening to your body. All disease is a form of being off balance. And if you are living in Wyoming and eating coconuts and green juice all winter, there is something off. Coconuts don't grow in Wyoming. It's a basic concept. You want to eat food that makes sense in your location.
Eat local and align yourself with nature. You can't go wrong. If you are eating local and seasonal, your body is in rhythm with the universe. By doing so you are (hopefully) eating organic foods, that haven't traveled thousands of miles to arrive at your plate. They quite simply make sense. You are connected and rooted with the world when you eat this way.
If you are eating foods from other parts of the world from where you physically are, you are off balance. You're going against the laws of the universe. Human bodies agree with ecological law. We are a part of nature and we need to align with the universe to stay in balance.
It's amazing how disconnected we get from ourselves and what our bodies are asking for. We think that if we read one article about a certain diet, we should be on that one. We listen to one podcast about a success story on another one, then we switch to that one. It's fine to try different things, but at your core you already know what to do. You already know what you need. The earth has it all for you. Just listen and respond.
Think about it. A dog eats grass when they have an upset stomach. Do you think they were told this by some other animal? No, probably not. They just know. It's nature. Yet humans are always seeking external verification for what is "right", when if we only listened to our bodies we would already know. Get to know yourself. Your body. Your soul. When you balance your entire life, you live in accordance to nature.
You will be forever grateful. The body (and it's machine) are a beautiful thing.
